In 2001 I left a successful twenty year career writing children's television to come back to Brooklyn from Los Angeles to follow my dream of finishing my first novel. BITE MARKS: A Vampire Testament, was begun in the 1980s, the time in which it's set. Within five years of my homecoming I had completed it, found an agent who got it, and they found me a senior editor at St. Martins who loved it. The end result was a two book trade paperback deal.
BITE MARKS came out from St. Martin's Griffin in September of 2009. It's still available online at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble.com, and fine bookstores everywhere. On my birthday last year, August 17th, Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review that included:
"Television writer Taylor pens a gritty, screenworthy supernatural noir set in 1980s New York ... Disparate, well-articulated motivations drive the various players in their race to save vampires and humans from one another. Truly enjoyable and imaginative, this thrilling, convoluted yarn is sure to delight any vampire fan."
The second book of the opening trilogy of The Vampire Testaments, BLOOD PRESSURE, arrived only six months later, March 30th of this year!
Publishers Weekly said: “Fascinating flashback sequences explore the Harlem Renaissance and prewar Berlin, and a powerful romance between young Joie and aging voodoo-practicing vampire Turner will melt readers’ hearts. Taylor keeps readers enthralled while setting the stage nicely for the next installment in this complex, fascinating world."
In the October 26th, 2009, issue of People Weekly, Whoopi Goldberg gave me a ringing endorsement that was great, mostly because I got to tell everyone that "Guinan" loved my book...My inner child enjoyed that. There's a fanboy in me, too. Thanks, Whoopi! I'm writing a killer role for you in book three, PAST LIFE: A Vampire Testament -- pun intended -- if anyone ever makes them into movies!
